One of the winners of the Strictly Come Newmarket competition to fill the town’s empty shops has declared their new business open.
Fish is the newest addition to the Guineas shopping centre and its walls and cabinets are crammed like sardines with fish and shellfish, frozen fish, freshly grown vegetable, jars of olives and condiments.
Trisha and Colin Bircham and their two sons, Ollie, 22, and Tom, 17, will share working in the shop.
The Bircham family is one of the success stories of Strictly Come Newmarket, a Dragons’ Den-style competition organised by the Newmarket Retailers’ Association and supported by our sister paper, the Newmarket Weekly News.
The contest saw budding entrepreneurs put forward business proposals for a chance to fill one of Newmarket’s empty shops.
The winners have received rent-free use of a shop unit, a donation towards shop- fitting, and free banking, legal and business advice.
Mrs Bircham, 54, said: “I applied to it, and in June, I did the pitch and I was number 13, and we were one of the winners. It was lucky 13, and from then we looked at premises around the town for what was suitable for us, we decided on the Guineas, and here we are, open at last.”
