Afternoon tea is a wonderful tradition (if you ask me), that we would like to keep alive and well here at The Pantry.
Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford is the lady we all need to thank for this afternoon ceremony. A girl after my own heart; Anna found the gap between lunch and dinner too much to bear and secretly ordered tea and cake to be delivered to her room at around 4pm one afternoon in the 1840’s.
Sharing her revelation with her friends, the trend caught on and by the 1880’s afternoon tea became a truly extravagant affair, it even had its own dress code.
Around the start of the 1900’s Josiah Spode, here by listed as one of my heros invented bone china which added a new depth of delicacy to the ceremony.
Fact: tea tastes better in bone China, I don’t know why.. it just does.
Afternoon tea has become part of our heritage; whilst the iconic Tea at The Ritz sets you back around £42 per person, you might like to know that the worlds most expensive afternoon tea can be found at The Cliveden House in Berkshire for a mere £550 per couple.. yes really! As you might expect it includes luxuries such as white truffles, Beluga caviar and a tea so rare that it costs £2,000 per kg.. so it’s a bargain really!
The next chapter in the story, begins right here in Newmarket at The Pantry…
I think we’d better start with the heartbeat of the occasion, tea. Our range of 14 fine loose leaf tea’s are supplied by tea guru’s Jeeve’s and Jericho of Oxford. We receive fantastic feedback about these teas every day, from their classic English Breakfast through to the heavenly Girlie Grey complete with rose buds and orange pieces. For the full list of teas please see our Afternoon Tea page.
Cream Tea £3.50 per person
Simple but delicious, it includes a pot of our fine loose leaf tea and a homemade scone with real clotted cream and local jam.
Our scones are the first job on the list for our chefs each morning, and they often have to produce a second batch in the afternoon due to their popularity.
The jams and marmalades we serve are made by Nikki of Nikki’s homemade preserves, Red Lodge. The raspberry jam is a particular favourite with our customers, and is available in our deli too.
Or why not treat yourself to the full experience with our:
