We opened our doors on the 15th of October 2011 after three nail biting weeks of transforming the former Vernon Smith’s carpet shop into our deli restaurant. It really was a close call to be ready on time, but on time we had to be!
The Pantry was the winner of the Newmarket Retailer Associations Competition for new businesses in the town, and one of the main prizes was a well advertised and organised Grand Opening Day to celebrate.
With a few sleepness nights and an all nighter the night before, the opening day was a great success and a fantastic day for the town as we celebrated severn new businesses that had opened on the back of the competition.
What a year it has been!
We were told we were crazy to open in Newmarket, but we are so glad we took the gamble and opened our first business in my home town. We are delighted with the way the business has been received and have really enjoyed getting to know our lovely regular guests.
Since we opened we have added Sunday to our opening hours, with brunch and lunch proving very popular. We have also added Monday through to Wednesday evenings so that we are now open six nights a week.
As our business has grown we have been pleased to add to our team, including our new assistant manager Maria, who I know very well as I previously worked with her at Loch Fyne Restaurant in Cambridge.
A very enthusiastic and passionate young lady by the name of Jess joined us as waitress back in April and has progressed to deli assistant and baker. Jess gets in at 6am to bake a wide variety of cakes, cookies and millionaire short bread which have already received much praise.
Thank you’s…. of which there are plenty!
We would firstly like to thank all of our regular customers, the familiar faces who grace us every day, every week or every month. We love the fact that The Pantry is many things to many people; for some it is a meeting place to catch up over a coffee for others it is a place to celebrate a special occasion over a three course meal.
Secondly we would like to thank our neighbours and suppliers Fish! of Burwell and Eric Tennants butchers for the consistently fantastic quality fish and meat and their personal service.
Thank you also Nikki of Nikki’s Home Made Preserves who supplies us with the most wonderful raspberry jam which goes perfectly with our homemade scones. We also serve Nikki’s award winning marmelade and stock a great range of her fantastic locally sourced and made preserves and chutneys in our deli.
Finally we would like to thank our team, they have worked their sock off this year and really got behind our ethos for striving to give the best and warmest service and deliver the best locally sourced and British dishes.
There was just one more thing that happened this year in The Pantry story…
Call it crazy, call it mad, call it what you like (and you’d probably be right) but Vince and I decided to get married after 9 years together and it just happened to be only 8 months after we started our first business! In hindsight it was a very intense experience planning a wedding a running a new business, but both of which have been better than we could ever have imagined!
